Porto Moniz

No nice view today while waking up. Clouds are quickly getting darker around us. We start packing everything while it’s still dry. Luckily, the sky just looks dramatic but no rain so far. We decide go back to the snack bar where we discuss our plans for today while having coffee and Pastel de natas (typical Portuguese egg tart pastry). We decide to take the bus to Porto Moniz.

A first bus brings us first to São Vicente. From where we take another bus – after buying some fresh cherries – to Porto Moniz.

As you can see, the weather is still not better when we arrive. Fortunately, the youth hostel in Porto Moniz is only 6 euro. A soft bed and warm shower today!

While everyone was taking a shower, the clouds disappeared. We had lunch outside the hostel with a view on the ocean. Enjoying the sun again, we make plans to go swim in the natural swimming pools of Porto Moniz. (Entrance: 1.5€ / p.p.)

A amazing experience. The ocean is still very wild with big waves crashing into the natural pools where we are swimming. The adrenaline these waves give us make us forget the water is cold.

After this little adventure, we still went to find a geocache. (Lieven is a geocache-addict and we need to keep him happy)
But it must be said, this small search was really worth the time spend. Through small wine fields and along a very old levada, we were brought to the ruines of an ancient butter and cheese factory. Climbing the steep stairs along the path also gave stunning views over Porto Moniz.
