Mren and the Armenian border Note: GPS location of site of Mren: 40.242265, 43.663054. (Page 351 in Bradt travel guide for Eastern Turkey) In the morning I woke up early, just like any other day of traveling, to make photos during the sunrise. I could have slept a little longer this time as I had to wait anyway for the sun to rise higher so the light can reach most of the gorge. A close up view shows how badly damaged this church is. Camping next to the church gives a stunning view from within the tent. Camping next to the last remaining church of Beşkilise. The last remaining church of Beşkilise. It takes over one hour to reach the site of Mren at the Armenian border along this path. Photo taken halfway my walk to Mren. The cathedral is visible on the left and looks closer than the border tower in the middle of the photo and the military site at the right side but is in reality still way beyond these. The cathedral is just very huge! Only piles of stones are left of the city of Mren. Only the cathedral is still standing. It’s still hard to reach the cathedral as you have to climb over all the stones without any path. In this street in Iğdır, the tea stove in the middle of the street serves not only the cafe but also surrounding shops and travelers like me who happen to pass by.
