Martin Heylen, a Belgian travel reporter and television maker, recently told about seven world wonders he has seen during all his travels. He chose the Cathedral of Ani as most impressive building he had ever seen. (‘Het Nieuwsblad’, June 28 2015. p24)
I totally share his idea about the ruined Armenian city of Ani. Now located in Eastern Turkey. Two years ago I was standing on the other side of the gorge, and border, between Armenia and Turkey. The holy Armenian city is visible but inaccessible from the Armenian side. The border is completely closed.
In May 2015, I visited the ruined city Ani during my trip in Eastern Turkey.
The World Monuments Fund (WMF) placed Ani on its 1996, 1998, and 2000 Watch Lists of 100 Most Endangered Sites.
